The 10 Year Old Business Card

You know those stacks of rubber-banded business cards you have on your desk, in your computer bag, and on your dresser? Collected once at networking functions or trade shows they now sit there, dusty and forlorn.

Months ago, you looked straight into the face of the person offering you the card and promised, "We'll be in touch. Can't wait to work with you." Now you stare at those fancy little rectangles, trying to reconstruct the conversation or at least remember their face!

We recently did a wedding in Minnesota for a lovely Bride who had seen The Three Waiters show at a corporate event 10 years ago. She took our card that night and determined that she was going to have us at her wedding someday, once she figured out who her husband was going to be. That, my friends, is someone who plans ahead!

My message here is simple: Hire The Three Waiters
and no one will ever forget your event. This is one of the main reasons we have been called "The Event Planner's Dream."

My Favorite Event Memory, the Sequel

My Funniest Event Memory, the Sequel.

A large part of what we do at The Three Waiters International is to surprise people. Sometimes this involves us doing things that end up scaring the living daylights of our us. This is one of those stories.

A few years ago, we found ourselves in Singapore doing a few performances over several days. The first performance was in the lovely Fullerton Hotel in the Marina Bay section of Singapore. By the way, don't get me started on Singapore. I love it there.

The performance in question was an event for the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, an organization doing wonderful work on the issue of climate change. I was, of course, excited to be a part and also to perform for the Prince, who had seen The Three Waiters before.

Because he had seen the show before, we needed to change things up a bit, in order to surprise him again. This is something we can easily do, so if you have hired us in the past, we can definitely delight one of your groups a second, third, or fourth time. :-)

We decided that on the night I would be disguised as a chef flown in specifically to oversee the meal that night. I was from a famous Monaco restaurant known to the Prince, and had just received my second Michelin Star, certainly making me notable enough to be introduced to the crowd that evening.

After the applause had died down, and I was about to return to the kitchen, someone tugged on my sleeve. "The Prince wishes to see you," a dapper man with a French accent said. I walked slowly across the ballroom as the guests rose to their feet in standing ovation and found myself face to face with His Serene Highness himself.

This is where it gets scary.

He gives my hand a firm shake, and in the loveliest French you've ever heard he begins to very publicly tell me... something. And everyone watched me carefully as I registered recognition and appreciation at the "something" he was saying to me. As you may have surmised, I do not speak French.

For the next 10 to 15 seconds I experienced sheer terror. I remember saying "Oui", then "Oui", then "Merci", and then I blanked until I recall him clapping me on the shoulder and thanking me one last time. I realized that he had bought it. He believed me!

Imagine my elation as I floated back to the kitchen, having successfully maintained my character in front of royalty and royal guests, and then imagine the look of surprise and laughter on the Prince's face 45 minutes later when he watched me do a very lovely rendition of a French aria. These moments are what The Three Waiters is all about.

Prince Albert II of Monaco
One of the funniest and most thrilling performances I've ever gotten to do. And we had a lovely post show conversation as well!

May I engage in a bit of quick marketing before I end this email? We are now debuting a new option for all of our shows, called "ThSong About You" and it's a way to combine a one of a kind, customized element with the most successful corporate and private event acts in the world. Your guests will not only never forget the show, they will never forget being written into the show! Call me and I'll be happy to elaborate.

Inspired by an Uber Driver

"You aren't so special," I heard an angry person say to someone the other day. How sad for them. Don't they know everybody is special?

I was travelling down to Florida to perform for the 100th Anniversary of the Port of Palm Beach. Serious fun with some cool history thrown in, a chance to spend time with an awesome client, and to perform with The Three Waiters guys.

I decided to use Uber from the airport to my hotel and the instant I booked it I got a call from a very efficient sounding voice named Myron. He wanted to know exactly where I was standing and exactly what I was wearing and he pulled up about a minute later, popping the trunk as he slid to a stop.

"Want some water?" he asked, as he struggled to contort his body into a water passing position. Myron was no spring chicken. I'm not a good judge of age, but I'd say mid 70s. "Can you believe some people try to pay me for the water?"

He asked me about myself and I told him two or three of the big facts, and we settled into some small talk. I asked him how long he had been in Palm Beach and told me that and more.

I'm going to put this in bullet points for "Uber" impact:

  • He's lived in Palm Beach for 10 years.
  • His wife had a serious bout with cancer since moving down and has spent much of the last few years in chemo and radiation. "She's doing good, though, and she's thinking of getting back into bowling."
  • He was born in Brooklyn, and spent his career running a Manhattan electrical contracting firm with nearly 100 employees.
  • On September 11th, the first plane hit the North Tower precisely in the section and on the side where his lifelong best friend worked. The second Myron heard he called and called his number. He recited the number to me 3 times very quickly.
  • Myron's son was walking away from the towers when the South Tower was hit, and landing gear impacted less than 100 feet from him.
  • He spoke at his friend's memorial, in front of 2,000 people, and his goal was to keep everyone laughing. "It's not about how we feel, it's about honoring him. He was a great guy. He was a happy guy."
  • Myron's business took a huge hit, like so many after September 11th. He pumped money in it, draining his savings, trying to keep it afloat. He finally had to close it. "I should have sold it when I had the chance."
  • "I wish my daughter would get back into stand-up. She is really good!"

We pulled up to the hotel. He turned around and smiled and told me to "have a great day." I got out of the car, and found that I didn't want to leave. I wanted to talk to the guy who nearly lost his wife, lost his best friend, lost his business, lost his savings, and was spending his retirement years driving an Uber car. He was positive, friendly, and amazingly inspirational.

It's Tuesday, and we are all up to our elbows in proposals, visa issues, load-in times, sound checks, contracts, and invoices. Sometimes our world seems no bigger than our desk and our desk seems as big as the world. Take a moment to remember we are all in this together. Say a good word to someone. Ask them how they are. Prepare to be inspired.

Yes, still kicking.

So, it's been so long since I posted on this thing, and I have to wonder if I should even say I'm blogging anymore. Not for lack of things happening, but isn't that the same for all of us?

A few work related updates. The Three Waiters has not done 11,000 shows in 85 countries. I've been on a few fun gigs as a performer in the last year, some of which we have photos of up on our Facebook page, like the one with Kevin Costner. If I get around to it, I'll post some photos here of some gigs in France and Macau that I liked, you know, in the next year or so. :-)

Also, The Three Waiters got another award! I think that's 9 total. Logo below!

Merry Christmas, Everybody

I link this off of my personal website as a "news" page, so I suppose I should put an entry up every so often.

My job with The Three Waiters combined with a very busy family life commands most of my time. I'm not doing many personal artistic projects, even though I have the desire to... I just don't have time.
Here are a few recent tidbits from my job:

That's it for now. I'll try to make this blog a little more active in the future.

My cousin Rachel is friends with someone at NBC 4 in Columbus and she told her about the recording of O Holy Night I had done for the Carr Center and they liked the idea a lot. So the sent one of their videographer/reporters, Carolyn Mendenhall, down and they interviewed me.
